We can provide you with the skills to successfully enter and remain in the workforce. |
An integral piece necessary to the fulfillment of our mission is the Project J.O.Y. (Job Opportunities for Youth) program. Created to respond to the high rate of unemployment in East Oakland, Project J.O.Y. is a comprehensive youth employment and training program. Our target population is youth and young adults ages 16-26 years old (ages 14 and 15 during summer break) who desire part-time, full-time, summer and seasonal
employment opportunities. These programs are designed to enhance the short term and long term employment through the integration of educational, counseling and job
placement services. Since its inception, Project J.O.Y. has provided over 8,000 young adults, ages 16–26 with job training and career development, and boasts a job placement rate of 70%. Many of Project J.O.Y.’s alumni can be found attending four year colleges, nurturing entrepreneurial ventures, or working as professionals in the private and public sectors. These young people developed and enhanced their abilities by remaining persistent in their dreams of becoming successful, productive citizens. |
Education Is A Key Focus We start instilling the value of education early. For first graders on up, our After-School Homework Center has tutors available for help and extra tutoring in difficult subject areas. We help students build skills, become disciplined with tasks, and develop confidence. (click here for informational brochure.) We encourage high-school dropouts to participate in our General Education Diploma (G.E.D.) preparation program. We mentor them through the four-month process, provide transportation to the test site and pay required fees - often the most critical barrier. Our graduation ceremony celebrates their hard-won achievements. We also offer brush up classes in math and English for working adults who need skill improvement to advance in their current job. (click here for informational brochure) We support young people in their quest for higher education. Pathway-to-College is a program which provides programmatic, financial and volunteer resources to those students interested in obtaining higher education. (click here for informational brochure)
The Computer Resources Administration Department realizes that computer literacy is critical to the success of job applicants at any level. We're very proud of our 20 workstation Magic Johnson Empowerment Center (formerly known as the HP Inventor Center) computer lab where we offer various 10-week programs to build computer competency. We also offer drop-in and self-paced skill development for those wanting to advance in their current job or change jobs. (click here for informational brochure.) |
In the Job Development facet of Project J.O.Y., clients are provided with one on one transferable assessments, labor market information, job opportunity listings, job placement assistance and follow-up career counseling to assure job retention. One of the main objectives of job development is to successfully place participants within a 30 day period.
The Job Training was designed with the intention of making participants as attractive as possible in the eyes of prospective employers. The sessions offer a curriculum of self-awareness, values clarification, goals-setting, conflict resolution, resume creation and interviewing skills. We assist participants in the job search by referring them to employers that best fit their career objectives. (click here for informational brochure.) |
