Mendoza and nine other high school students from Oakland, Calif., can credit the Oakland Raiders’ two-time All-Pro cornerback, who funds and plans the annual Asomugha College Tour through the East Oakland Youth Development Center. Both the person and place are steeped in history: Asomugha became the league’s highest-paid defensive back ever after signing a three-year deal in February that guarantees him $28.5 million, and the East Oakland Youth Development Center (EOYDC) was founded 36 years ago by former Clorox Company chairman Robert Shetterly. More than 100 volunteers from the Oakland business community will complete renovation projects Saturday in East Oakland for National Rebuilding Day. April 2,2009 San Leandro Times Newspaper Soroptimists Offer a Hand To Promising Young Women |
Soroptimist International of the East Bay (serving Castro Valley, San Leandro, San Lorenzo and Hayward) gave out $2,500 to three deserving women at it's March meeting. Alma Barocio received the $1,000 "Women's Opportunity Award" to assist her in continuing her pursuit of a college degree, and with general living expenses. Barocio is striving to support her family and get a degree. She works as executive assistant to the ED of East Oakland Youth Development Center and attends Cal State East Bay, studying non-profit management. [Full story] |

Over 250 people attended the East Oakland Youth Development Center’s Community Fall Job Fair on Thursday. The fall job fair is a part of EOYDC’s Project J.O.Y. (Job Opportunities for Youth) employment training program, which places over 300 young adults in jobs annually and offers help with resume preparation, interview skills, job survival tips and more. During his senior year at Cal, Asomugha had a chance meeting with Regina Jackson, the president of the East Oakland Youth Development Center. The community-based nonprofit Center, which began in 1973 as a job training facility, has transformed under Jackson's tutelage into an educational, academic and recreational haven for children ages 5 to 20. A major distinguishing factor is the Center's hands-on mentality, which puts its youth in operational roles. "My first time there during my rookie year, when I saw the secretary was a 12-year-old and the head chef was a 14-year-old, I was drawn to that style of leadership and wanted to help out," Nnamdi says.
