The EOYDC is a place that has given me opportunities, motivation, encouragement, and skills in life. I can remember riding in the car passing Center saying to myself, “One day I’m going to be a part of that Center” and that’s exactly what I did, I became a part of the solution.

I started attending the EOYDC at the age of thirteen in 1997 when I was asked by Kwame Nitoto to play on his basketball team. From that point on, I became more involved doing various activities from computer classes’ basketball, volunteering, and becoming a member of the staff as a Recreational Aide.

Like many youth, I had a time in my life where I ran into some trouble. Unlike most centers that kick you out for doing something wrong, the EOYDC gave me another chance, because of this I gained wisdom and determination from my fellow co workers and most of all, the executive director Regina Jackson. The people there helped develop me into a responsible aptitude young woman.

My story doesn’t end there; at the age of eighteen I became pregnant with my first child. A lot of people doubted me, didn’t think I would finish school nor become successful. With determination, and encouraging words from the EOYDC through out the years and support, I knew that I would have my Bachelors Degree double majoring in Criminal Justice and Sociology. The EOYDC didn’t turn their back on me; they helped me in every aspect you can imagine with assistance with school books and supplies. I couldn’t be more appreciative for the support and love they have shown me through my time here. This is my home away from home, my second family, a place I know that is always there for me.

Working at EOYDC has been a tremendous experience. I have formed many relationship with the staff as well the people who come to EOYDC. Working there has also given me the opportunity to share my own personal experience with the youth and help to lead them in the right direction just as the Center has done for me.
After graduating from Cal State Eastbay in 2006, I married my longtime love and the father of my two children. My daughter, who was born an “EOYDC baby”, enjoyed her first summer as participant in the Summer Cultural Enrichment Program in 2007.

Currently I am in the process of completing my Masters Degree in Criminal Justice (public administration) and plan to graduate in September 2008. I also work for Alameda Point Collaborative, which is housing that serve low income and homeless families. I can proudly say that the EOYDC is part of the reason where I am life and with out them I don’t know what would have become of me.

Thank you EOYDC
