I have been a part of the EOYDC since I was 13. I started off as a participant attending the different programs, such as the Computer classes in the Computer Resource Center and sports in the Physical Development Department. From that point on, I was taught how to use different skills that pertain to working with youth. I began to volunteer at the Center to show that I was a person who could fulfill the responsibility to work with the youth and was hired a few months later as a Recreational Aide in the Physical Development Department. Since I have been working at the Center, I have come to enjoy working with the youth and the staff members. Being a part of the Center is like a family away from home. There is always someone willing to help you when you need it. Every day I look forward to coming to work to help the youth. It’s great to know that you have youth that look up to you and can’t wait to see your face when you come to work. The EOYDC has given me many resources in my life to help me achieve my goals. I am currently a junior at Cal State East Bay; I am double majoring in Sociology and Criminal Justice. Due to budget cuts in the school’s money, I didn’t have enough money to pay for all the books I needed for my classes. The EOYDC helped me by providing me with a $500 scholarship, and I also received another $250 a month later. I greatly appreciate the EOYDC for helping me to achieve my goals in life. I plan to receive my BA degree in the winter of 2006. After I receive degree, I plan on going into the Masters program at Cal State East Bay. The EOYDC has taught me a lot of things, such as patience and determination. I have a lot of opportunities to meet many people in the different corporate fields. I have also been to different places that helped me grow in the corporate world. Working at EOYDC has given me great benefits in life. I can say that it is a joy to come to work to be a part of the solution. My favorite lesson learned at EOYDC is that hard work, school, and striving for your goal can put you at the top and never let you down. You can’t go wrong with those three things, and I have the EOYDC to thank for helping me accomplish those things. Keyanna Davis, Recreational Aide |
