I started at the East Oakland Youth Development Center as a youth leader in the summer of 2003. I really didn’t know what to expect from the Summer Cultural Enrichment Program, but I felt I was extremely blessed to have the opportunity to apply for the job. I didn’t know anything about this summer program when I called Sister Jackie. I was calling to ask her about summer jobs when she told me to come to one of her workshops. That Wednesday I arrived 30 minutes early. At first I really didn’t know what sister Jackie was talking about in the workshop but I continued to listen. I had a lot of catching up to do, so I stayed after to work on the computers and ask questions. The first day working at the E.O.Y.D.C was the beginning of a new attitude and the end of not wanting to face my fears. Two of my biggest fears was working with people that I didn’t know, and doing things I have never done before. I was stuck inside my comfort zone and never wanted to come out. I’m extremely happy that I did over come my fears. I have met all types of wonderful people like Pam Moore, Morrie Tuner and football players from the Raider’s team. I have gone many places like Great America, Ardenwood Historic Farm, and the Exploratorium. I have also tested my inner strength by going on a Big City Mountaineers trip. That was my hardest challenge, thanks to a wonderful leader (Ms. Regina) and a good support team (Breana, Olivia, Rayneisha and Terina), I was able to complete the trip. I have learned and grown so much the past three years. My family and friends have seen a major improvement in my attitude. I always had a bad attitude about school and friends. I was never happy because I couldn’t trust anyone. I didn’t have any true friends to talk to when I was going through problems in my life. I always felt as if I was alone. My grandparents were my best friends and they did their best. Although I am extremely grateful,I still had an empty spot in my heart; I wanted the opportunity to experience things with different people. The E.O.Y.D.C gave me that opportunity; I have a strong group of friends that I thank God for everyday. I have been blessed to be a part of the solution. It has been the best time of my life. If I could start over I would have started at the Center when I was much younger. I think this is the best place to learn how to become a young adult. I have learned new things and I will continue to keep learning more and more as I continue to grow here at the East Oakland Youth Development Center in my current position as Homework Center Coordinator. -Cierra Standford, Homework Center Coordinator |
