Giving Youth A Chance

Cultural Enrichment Program (SCEP): is an entirely youth-led program that serves more than 200 students, ages 5 to 12.. The theme is “all around the world,” giving students the opportunity to explore cultural traditions from six continents. SCEP features daily academic and enrichment classes in computers, dance, art, science, fashion, creative writing, physical fitness, cooking, drama, math, journalism, videography, and life skills. Because many students have limited opportunities to explore the Bay Area, we also invest in weekly field trips to venues such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Exploratorium, Alameda County Fair and Aqua Adventures.

also provides training and employment for approximately 70 youth, ages 13 to 22, who serve as responsible for planning, coordinating, leading, mentoring, and facilitating. With the initial support of a grant from Google’s Bay Area Impact Challenge, we implemented an intensive training experience for the core youth leadership team. We have continued the intensive training approach since 2016. Eight students attended a two-day offsite retreat where they received extensive training in communication, conflict management, decision-making, problem solving, and team dynamics. All of our youth leaders receive training in Positive Discipline, a trauma-informed approach that promotes emotional health and wellbeing while guiding children to correct behaviors.

In recruiting for SCEP over 200 youth apply and more than 125 participate in a five-week training series designed to prepare them for the intensive interview process. Competitive interviewing facilitates selection of more than 80 young people to serve as Youth Leaders. After hiring an additional round of intensive training is offered to prepare them for their role and equip them with life skills such as financial literacy, stress management, self -branding and awareness.

has been in place since 1996. It became entirely yoith led in 2005. It has successfully evolved into our signature leadership program.
