Oakland — More than 100 volunteers from the Oakland business community will complete renovation projects Saturday in East Oakland for National Rebuilding Day.

They will work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to put the finishing touches on the East Oakland Development Center at 8200 International Blvd. It’s one of 33 area homes and community facilities being rehabilitated through the program, a monthlong effort organized by partner nonprofit Rebuilding Together Oakland.

Workers will update the 25-year-old center’s electrical fixtures, sheetrock, exterior lighting, air conditioning units and more.

General contractor Skanska and subcontractors donated $80,000 in financial, in-kind services to rehabilitate the center’s main facility.

National Rebuilding Day is the annual signature event of Rebuilding Together, a leading national nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership by bringing volunteers and communities together to rehabilitate the homes of low-income homeowners.

The center has served more than 30,000 children, adolescents, young adults and parents from East Oakland and throughout the city since its inception in 1973.

This is Skanska’s second consecutive year participating in RTO, which enables the local commercial builder to give back to the communities where it does business.
